ABOUT ANTIFREEZE – FUNCTION, TYPES AND HANDLING
Functions of coolants (antifreeze) are:1. Freeze prevention in the engine cooling system,2. Corrosion prevention,3. Prevention of scale built-up in the system,4. Prevention of cavitation appearance,5. Improved heat transfer – improved cooling.
Traditional antifreeze (IAT): change period of this antifreeze type is 2 years. It has blue colour.Hybrid antifreeze (HOAT) or G11 antifreeze: change period of this antifreeze type is 3 years. It has green colour.Organic antifreeze (OAT) or G12 (Long Life): change period of this antifreeze type is 5 years. It has purple colour.Enhanced organic antifreeze (SOAT) or G13: change period of this antifreeze type is 5-7 years. It has better corrosion protection than the OAT antifreeze. It has purple colour.
Antifreeze handling1. Antifreeze is poisonous, so a bittering agent is added to all antifreeze products;2. There must always be antifreeze in the cooling system;3. Antifreeze products of different quality levels must not be mixed together. This is the reason why different antifreeze types have different colours designating their quality. To put it simply, do not mix antifreeze products of different colours;4. The antifreeze change period should be observed, following manufacturer’s recommendations and in accordance with the conditions of use;5. Antifreeze is to be stored in original packaging that is airtight, at temperatures of up to + 30ºC. In such conditions, antifreeze can be stored for up to 3 years maximum.
